Bland (Madison Elizabeth Holland - Lafayette, LA)

Even the word is  Tasteless. Nothing. No good no bad no in between. Run little sheep run! Jump over the fences and put yourselves to bed. Sleep away cognizance.  Sleep and ignore the horrors that are part of your world. Sleep and forget that you are ok because your skin is pale. Bland. No salt, no seasoning. Walk the line, tiptoe around who you might have been. Don't let anyone see your flavor. Spice will bar you from that busy business place. Your hair or teeth or skin or dress: It must be bland. Do not offend Do not presume Do not opine. Just stay in your lane They'll guide you home They'll take away pain They'll leave you alone They'll rescind your name They'll make you a drone They'll make you insane. (But it's ok because they'll pay for your pills) Your heart is sand And your words are bland Really you're not really you anymore Mama, they took them away.

Gumbo: Comfort, Every Valley (Sasha Massey - Lafayette, LA)

I Fix (Madison Elizabeth Holland - Lafayette, LA)

Let me hold you within my heart There is a you-shaped space there, safe and nurturing Where you can rest and fall apart if you need to You are tired and sad, and things are weighing heavy on you I can see it in your face, feel it vibrating off of you, hear it in your voice Life is difficult, I know Life is brutal, and it fucks us all up  Life gives us the worst things we can possibly imagine not being able to handle But also Life is so full of promise and hope Life is bursting with love and beauty Life gives us each other And that is a miracle beyond all else I know I will never succumb to the worst of life simply because I also have the best of life to rely on and seek comfort in I have you

Bromance (Louis Toliver Jr - Swartz, LA)

Come here fella Let me love you, Your emotional needs, We are strong allies No women, just us Snuggle up close, buddy  Let me be your friend We are sensitive men Tell me your heart Your deepest desires  I promise to protect, With a hug, I support you

Les Mots Passè (2022.6 - Valentines)

The Path of the Pariah (Joseph Michael Benoit - Iowa, LA)

We used to feed the trees Now we do everything  to kill the butterflies and the bees With no butterflies, bees, and trees You'll find no salvation No matter how long on your knees Unless less you are there Planting seeds and pulling weeds Because ignorance of life Is the death of all needs

Definition (Sasha Massey - Lafayette, LA)

I am who I was born to be. My voice is not a separate part of me. My beauty is not in contrast to my voice. You cannot narrow me down. I'm a lot. You can take small bites, but you're gonna take all of me exactly as I am.

Les Mots Passè (2022. 5 - May 2013)

Rainfallen (Daniel W. K. Lee - New Orleans, LA)

Not the blade that cleaves, but the crowbar that pries open blacktop & summer blouses as though haunted. Not a marathon of grey, but a drive-by toward blue sky blossoming and buckling umbrellas like Miss Irma’s magnolias. Not a baptism—droplets blessing crow’s feet, lace fronts, or cheeks— but the  O God  of drowning mid-air.

The Dog Show (Jorge Arturo - New Orleans, LA)

Come pretty puppy Prance out into the light So  we can see your coat, your ears, Your teeth, your tail. Stand up straight pretty puppy Lift your rear pretty puppy Speak  pretty puppy But not too loudly   Leap the hoops pretty puppy Run  down the path That every other pretty puppy runs So  you  a re just as prett y J ust as lively J ust as fun J ust as fashionable But not too different   Bleach your fur So  it’s all one color Trim your nails So  they’re not too sharp Quell the not-so pretty puppy parts That we don’t want to see That we can’t bear to see So  we can pretend they don’t exist   After all, everybody wants to be a pretty puppy Don’t they?
