Les Mots Passé (2023.1 - 2022 Finale Debuts)

The Optimistic Candle (Louis Toliver Jr - Swartz, LA)

Knifed in the back countless times. I still get up everyday. I face what is wrong with this screwed up world, making things right, shining a little light.  I refuse to live in fear. I choose to live in love.  Through the darkness of humanity, I am an optimistic candle.   Sometimes, when I am laying alone at night in my bed I reach behind my back and I am shocked to find my blood on my hands and the pain that goes along with it.  If stab wounds were truth, I’d be dead by now. However, that ‘truth’ is just a lie because it is caused by fear.  I am  an optimistic candle and if I must bleed to death then I shall do it.      Have you ever been in a dark room during a storm and the lights go out? How relieved are we when we get a candle lit and it brings light to our eyes? But have you ever used one candle to light other candles and the light grows?  The room seems safe because the shadows disappear and the door is visible.  It takes just one candle to light a room, how many candles to light

The Raging Furor of Rejection (Le Voir N. Lewis - New Orleans, LA)

My perception may have been a little cloudy, but my vision was clear as glass, Watching the way you would look at me, admiring my dry wit and sass. Our experiences are what bonded us, our lives made us a duo, at best. It didn’t take much for you to put your trust in me, so I let fate take care of the rest. Behold, a drastic change in your output of love, You grimaced at my desire. Suddenly I felt the warm, brash sensation of embarrassment. Your detest set my soul on fire. The coldness of your attention, the prickly tension when I call your name. Your answer to another interest at night, right about now. Our friendship will never be the same. I ask have you betrayed me? Your answer is so innocent, “No, never.” Your devilish charm exudes lies and deceit. You, my once friend, aren’t so clever. I’ve had doors closed in my face a few times before, and my relationships are so few. But a flicker of hope radiated through my soul the first moment

A Candle in the Wind (Chase Miller - New Orleans, LA)

I’m ready for my story to begin. Ever since I was a kid, I always felt like I was born for something greater. Sure, I sound like every melodramatic human out there, but cliché or not, I think that’s how we all felt inside. We all thought the world was exciting and brand new, and maybe that’s because everything is exciting and brand new. Our birth was a match that lit a candle, and we hoped could burn all the air that we could to embolden that tiny flicker of fire into a second sun, radiant and timeless. We felt what I am feeling now as I type this. A feeling not unlike a current of electricity, powering every skin cell in my body to lift the very hair on my body. This stream of energy has fueled every aspect of me in the past, but somehow, that current has gotten blocked for some time. Although maybe it was never actually blocked in the first place now that I think of it. Sometimes, it feels like life does its best to leave us stuck at a crossroads, wondering where to go
