Hard Work (Chase Miller - New Orleans, LA)

Let's meet Bob. Bob is a clean Christian man. He wears a nice shirt, tie, and slacks every day. He has a nice, clean bright attitude about the world. Bob is very polite and is a man that wears his heart on his sleeve. The man does not smoke, nor drink, nor take drugs. Bob is a very keen rule follower as well. If someone told him that he was required to wake up early and shine his shoes everyday, he would most likely wake up at precisely 5:00 a.m. on the dot, and then shine his shoes to a brilliant glimmer.

Now, our friend Bob here sounds like a nice man. Clean cut, honest, and friendly. But here's the problem.

Bob has no job, no education, and still lives with his parents. Why is this, you might find yourself asking?

Because Bob believes in the power of prayer. Now, you may found yourself asking why the heck am I dogging the fact that Bob prays. But, the fact that he prays is not the issue.

The truth of the matter is that, Bob only prays. And what does he ask God for?

Crap. Legitimate, concrete crap. Like money, or the newest iPhone, or the latest season of Glee on DvD. Maybe something else. I did not say he was gay.

Bob thinks that the only way he will receive something is through prayer. And while his parents may provide that for him, I am positive that they are tired of doing it. Besides, I'd think his parents would want to have the nest to themselves. Who knows what parents do when their children leave home indefinitely? I don't want to think about.

There is a solution to good ol' Bob's dilemma, he needs to know how to pray. When one asks for something from the powers that be, he or she should not expect for those things to magically appear. One should ask for the strength, or courage, or determination, or whatever positive trait that will help them achieve their goals and desires. But, that isn't suddenly given to them either. This isn't some "potion of positivity," now. When one asks for one of these traits, they should expect a situation or event that will teach them whatever it is that they want to have. Your personality doesn't come from wishing. It comes from experience.

Now if you do not believe in prayer, but constantly wish for things and complain for something better when you do not do anything about it, walk over to a mirror, look at your butt, and tell yourself that you are acting like it.

No one achieves anything by doing nothing.

Lunatic (Lily Lechler - New Orleans, LA)

“Lunacy” comes from the moon,  Who cycles through brilliance and darkness  Bipolarity’s patterns are not so easily assumed  Opposites not so well harnessed Who cycles through brilliance and darkness?  The girl who sits in bed, wrestling with  Opposites. Not so well harnessed As she thought, her brain gives reason the slip The girl who sits in bed, wrestling with Her body, depressed, her thoughts manic. As she thought, her brain gave reason the slip  And gives the gift of life in a dreamlike panic. Her body depressed her thoughts. Manic  Lunacy comes from the moon And gives the gift of life in a dreamlike panic  Bipolarity’s patterns are not so easily assumed

The Harvest (Nick Perere - Baton Rouge, LA)

When I was in college a barely adult youth, strange men a circular ellipse around me placed their heavy hands on my temple and prayed in twisted tongues like at the Tower of Babel Casting out the  Demon of Homosexuality.  I like to think on that day,  the Demon was free’d.  And he formed this  gayer than gay version of me.  Maybe he escaped the Bible Belt  and found himself in  New York or San Francisco. Free from being Oppressed.  Repressed.  Dogmatized.  Free from the thoughts of  self harm.  Free from trying so hard to be  someone they’re not meant to be.  While I mourn for my youth,  it started over when I escaped the spiritual enclave the cult.  Doesn’t make me an atheist. Because that in itself is a religion. But I no longer converse with the Creator. Or walk in the Holy Spirit.   I have embraced my demons And that brings me peace.  God loves all of His children except you.
