Stiff cardboard toes covered in satin
Tap nervously against the polished wood
The director walks slowly in a circle
Muttering under her breath
Burning lavender incense to calm frayed nerves
Deep breaths, sheen of sweat glistens
Gesturing through future movements
Reminding muscles of what they've done
A million times in front of mirrors
Now is the crucial time, under the glaring lights
One run-through out of thousands
To spell their worth against the vaulted ceilings
Measure their success by the audience
Quick hugs, quivering muscles, sweaty hands
But when the lights go down and the stage is dark
Everyone finds their center, a hushed stillness falls
Suddenly they know they are performers
A look is shared before the fixed smiles come down

There’s nothing that hurts more than when we lose someone from our Louisiana Words family. But, the beauty of our writing movement is that the words of our loved ones live on with us. On June 20th, 2023, Louisiana Words Allstar, Jorge Arturo, moved on from this world leaving our hearts broken. He was a charismatic and talented human being.
